March 2 2009 History of Education and the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008: Message from Professor Joyce Goodman, President HES The RAE (Research Asssessment Exercise) 2008 highlighted the high quality of research that been produced by UK historians of education. The Subject Overview Report for Education in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise commented on the "original and high quality theoretical, scholarly and critical work" in History of Education, alongside Philosophy and Sociology of Education, and pointed out that while this was not all related directly to immediate policy priorities or practical concerns, it "offered challenging new agendas". Moreover, it noted, "it is important to the field as a whole that resources and opportunities continue to be available to enable such cutting edge contributions to thrive as well as to encourage greater interplay between these and other research traditions." The UK History of Education Society has supported the development of high quality research in history of education through investment in research training and through networking of the type to which the Education RAE 2008 sub panel refers. The History of Education Society runs an annual research student conference and a strand for postgraduate researcher students in the Society's main annual conference, and also offers bursaries to postgraduate researcher students to attend. The Society supports the development of UK history of education on an international scale both through its own conferences, attended by historians of education from all over the world. The UK History of Education SOCIETY fosters world-leading research and international networking via ISCHE [The International Standing Conference for the History of Education] by financing a competition for a fully-funded bursary to the ISCHE conference wherever the ISCHE conference is held in the world. The Society is currently investing in a research fellowship, in the journal History of Education and through its Researcher, which mentors new researchers through the peer review process to publish alongside the more experienced. Such activities play a key role in fostering the research environment that makes possible the world-leading research of the type attested to by RAE 2008. We will continue to look for "resources and opportunities" to enable researchers to maintain and promote our field in the future. Joyce Goodman, President, History of Education Society
